I decided to design a lesson plan on how to create Optical illusions like art using the iPad using the inquiry based teaching strategy
Subject Area: Art, Science, Technology
Intended age level : 11-15 years
Abstract: Through observation and discussion on Optical illusions
students will make connections with color, light and patterns to create optical
illusion like paintings using the iPad.
Prerequisites: Must know how to use the iPad and know how to save images
from the internet onto the camera roll.
Must be familiar on how to use the Procreate app.
Concepts/Curriculum:
1.
Elements:
Color, Light, Patterns, Shapes
2.
Science:
Light, Optical Illusions, Patterns
Discussion questions/open-ended questions:
Ø What do you see in this
painting?
Ø What do you think about
colors and patterns in this painting?
Ø What do you think you know about optical
illusions?
Information about Optical
Illusions
Do your eyes ever play a
trick on you? Maybe you've seen something that puzzled you so much that you had
to rub your eyes and look again? Chances are you may have been tricked by an
optical illusion.
Optical
illusions are images or pictures that we perceive differently than they really
are. Put another way, optical illusions occur when our eyes send information to
our brains that tricks us into perceiving something that does not match
reality.
The word “illusion” comes from the Latin
word illudere, which means “to mock.”
Optical Illusions can use color, light
and patterns to create images that can be deceptive or misleading to our
brains. The information gathered by the eye is processed by the brain, creating
a perception that in reality, does not match the true image. Perception refers
to the interpretation of what we take in through our eyes. Optical illusions
occur because our brain is trying to interpret what we see and make sense of
the world around us. Optical illusions simply trick our brains into seeing things
which may or may not be real.
Interesting isn't? Want to create your own 3D hand optical
illusion? Jump right in.
Activity:
Get This:
- -- iPad loaded with Procreate App
- -- Stylus (Optional)
- --Hand template or you can trace your own hand on the iPad. ( I used a hand template found on Google)
- -- And a creative spirit!
Try This:
1) Open a new canvas by clicking the “+” sign on the top right
corner of procreate desktop. You will
see the default “Preset” highlighted in blue color
2) Click on “Retina” which will open you to a new canvas. This
canvas size is the same proportion as your iPad to exactly fit your screen.
3) Once you click on the Retina it will open a new canvas.
4) Keeping the background layer color with its default color
white. Let us proceed to layer 1.
5) Now you can either trace your hand on the canvas or use a
template found on Google. I used the template found on Google. To import an
image, I first saved the image from Google into my camera roll and then
imported this onto Procreate.
6) To import an image from your camera roll straight to your
canvas, you first need to hit on the “wrench” icon (Actions). You will see
“Import” highlighted in blue. Click on “Import Image”.
7) The first time you use this option your iPad will ask for
access to your Photos library. Once you will allow it, you will see a feed from
your camera roll.
8) Once you select your image, you can move and scale it however
you like. In our case we will be selecting a hand template from the camera
roll.
9) It will now look like this:
10) Now open a new layer—Layer 2.
Go to brushes and then go to
Inking and choose either a Technical pen or a Marker can be either colored or
black.
11) Now draw a straight line from the edge of the canvas to the edge of
the outline. Next, draw a curved line over the hand, and draw another straight
line to the edge of the canvas. Repeat until you have a stripey optical
illusion!
12) Your layer
will now look like this
12.5) Don’t worry if your lines are not neat looking, you can
always color it later and it will be just fine. Right now just draw the lines
like the picture above.
13) Now comes the fun
part, let us now open a new layer—Layer 3. Go to brushes and go to inking and
choose a brush pen. You can also choose a flat marker or a round marker. Play
around and see what works for you. But for this painting I used a brush pen.
14) Go to your color palette and select 3 colors that go well
together and start coloring filling in the gaps between basic lines by drawing
lines in between. You can choose your
favorite colors. But always repeat the same order of colors. If it’s necessary,
fill any white spots you missed.
15) It will begin to look somewhat like this.
16) It takes a little bit of time and patience to color, but I am
sure you will be happy with your painting when you are done.
17) Go on coloring repeating the order till the end until you are
done.
18) Stand back and enjoy
your 3D Hand optical illusion painting.
Challenge/ Follow up
Activity: Try doing an optical illusion of your favorite character in
a similar way.
